Reimbursement 'very uncertain' regarding anesthesia for chronic pain blocks, CEO says

Future reimbursement of anesthesia for chronic pain blocks is "very uncertain," according to Anesthesia Business Consultants President and CEO Tony Mira.

Three quick points:

1. Most insurance plans currently provide reimbursement for anesthesia for chronic pain blocks, which represents 1 to 2 percent of cases for most ABC clients. Notably, Horizon Blue Shield in New Jersey does not reimburse the service.

2. Practices should note that cases involving anesthesia for chronic pain blocks tend to generate more denials. Though often resolved through the appeals process, these denials mean it takes longer to get paid.

3. ABC anticipates that most payers will eliminate payments for chronic pain blocks within the next few years. Practices aren't encouraged to expand this line of business right now.
