Reimbursement for postoperative pain rounds — 3 reminders

The pain round is the final part of the postoperative pain process, according to Anesthesia Business Consultants President and CEO Tony Mira.

Mr. Mira defined a pain round as a provider visit meant to evaluate a patient's condition.

Three reminders he shared:

1. Providers can typically get paid for a round beginning the day after the procedure; you cannot bill for a round performed the same day as the pain block.

2. There are two different types of pain rounds: daily pain rounds and rounds involving patients who don't have an indwelling epidural or spinal catheter. They're billed with different codes.

3. Round documentation for patients with an epidural or spinal catheter should include notation about the epidural catheter, the related drug delivery system, and other patient-specific items.
