After a search that lasted a year-and-a-half, Dr. Meir was chosen from a pool of more than 6,100 applicants that demonstrated exceptional academic, operational, and physical abilities, according to NASA.
She and her fellow astronaut trainees will begin their training at locations around the world. According to NASA, the team is preparing for missions in Earth’s orbit and on Mars as well as the first human mission to an asteroid.
