Excessive ventilation during CPR can reduce blood flow the heart, which decreases the chance of survival, according to the report. The study showed excessive rescue breaths in nearly two-thirds of CPR segments.
According to the researchers, hyperventilation has been shown to worsen outcomes in animals — and based on this data, researchers expect to see a similar effect in humans. The study is the first to assess adherence to ventilation rate guidelines for pediatric patients.
