Physician burnout affects more than half of anesthesiologists: 4 key notes

In a column for Anesthesia Business Consultants, President and CEO Tony Mira examined physician burnout rate for anesthesiologists.

Here's what you should know.

1. Physician burnout affects nearly half of all providers and 51 percent of anesthesiologists, according to Medscape's "Lifestyle Report 2017."

2. In a Health Affairs article, 10 major health system CEOs referred to burnout as a national crisis and a matter of absolute urgency.

3. Mr. Mira offered several strategies to combating burnout including:

  • Acknowledging and addressing the problem
  • Harnessing the power of leadership
  • Developing and implementing targeted interventions
  • Cultivating community at work
  • Use rewards and incentives to allow physicians to pursue meaningful aspects of work
  • Promote values and strengthen culture
  • Promote flexibility and work-life integration
  • Facilitate and fund organization science

4. Mr. Mira encourages physicians to do everything in their power to control their practice. He said reaching out to a billing and practice management vendor can often alleviate some unneeded administrative burden.
