Here’s what you need to know:

1. By performing select dental procedures, surgical interventions and diagnostic tests during one visit, physicians can help to limit children’s exposure to anesthesia.

2. Reducing exposure to anesthesia works to decrease associated complications, like vomiting, pain, fever and pneumonia.

3. Combing procedures also saved patients an average of 30 percent in medical costs; the researchers saw $165,000-worth of savings in the 55 cases they studied.

4. The researchers encourage physicians and dentists to use EMRs to identify recommended procedures that can be performed at the same time.

5. However, not all procedures can be performed in conjunction with one another — for example, procedures like spinal fusion and heart surgery, which have high risk of infection.
