Only 25% of anesthesiologists are happy at work — 29 statistics

Anesthesiologists are about as happy — or unhappy — as other specialists, according to Medscape's Anesthesiologist Lifestyle, Happiness & Burnout Report 2019.

Medscape surveyed 15,069 physicians across 29-plus specialties.

The percentage of respondents that reported being "very" or "extremely" happy, by specialty:

1. Plastic surgery: 41 percent
2. Public health and preventive medicine: 40 percent
3. Ophthalmology: 39 percent
4. Dermatology: 34 percent
5. Pathology: 31 percent
6. Pediatrics: 31 percent
7. Critical care: 30 percent
8. Pulmonary medicine: 30 percent
9. Otolaryngology: 30 percent
10. Psychiatry: 29 percent
11. Orthopedics: 29 percent
12. Oncology: 29 percent
13. Rheumatology: 28 percent
14. General surgery: 27 percent
15. Cardiology: 27 percent
16. OB-GYN: 27 percent
17. Nephrology: 26 percent
18. Diabetes and endocrinology: 26 percent
19. Infectious diseases: 26 percent
20. Radiology: 25 percent
21. Anesthesiology: 25 percent
22. Allergy and immunology: 24 percent
23. Urology: 24 percent
24. Family medicine: 23 percent
25. Neurology: 23 percent
26. Gastroenterology: 22 percent
27. Internal medicine: 21 percent
