Here’s what you should know:
1. Dr. Havdala led the department for more than three decades. He served on the health system’s board for more than two decades and was the health system’s first physician chairman.
2. Dr. Havdala died from complications of dementia.
3. He was born in Minya, Egypt, and began his medical career there before coming to Chicago in 1958. He spent a year at Chicago’s Edgewater Hospital before completing a two-year residency at Mount Sinai. He spent the rest of his career there.
4. Former Chicago-based Sinai Health System President Benn Greenspan said of Dr. Havdala, “He was, I think, perhaps the finest human being I ever met working there.”
5. Dr. Havdala’s selflessness and leadership were admired throughout the health system.
