According to an accompanying editorial by Ken B. Johnson, MD, from the University of Utah, new drug development techniques increase the ability of researchers to create better, safer anesthetics with real benefits for patient care.
According to the report, separate research groups are using a combination of older and newer techniques, including molecular-level techniques and computer simulations, for “fast, clean and soft” drug development. Fast anesthetics deliver results more quickly; softer anesthetics are more predictable; and cleaner anesthetics deliver fewer unwanted side effects.
