Michigan medical board suspends license of overprescribing physician — 5 insights

The Michigan Board of Medical Examiners accused Louis Spagnoletti, MD, of "indiscriminately" prescribing opioids, the Courier Post reports.

Here's what you should know.

1. The state took issue with his treatment of seven patients from September 2005 to July 2017.

2. Dr. Spagnoletti allegedly prescribed several full-month supplies of painkillers weeks apart to at least one patient that was at high-risk of opiate abuse. He also allegedly prescribed opioids to a patient for more than six years. The patient had told Dr. Spagnoletti they wanted to quit taking the pain pills and enter a detox center.

2. The state banned Dr. Spagnoletti from treating patients and prescribing drugs. He will remain banned until he goes before a judge.

4. Dr. Spagnoletti denied any wrongdoing.

5. Dr. Spagnoletti has been barred from practicing medicine since August 2017. He cannot enter a medical office when patients are present, and he must seek board approval to engage in any nonclinical medical employment.
