Marion VA Anesthesiologist Moonlights as Firefighter, Police Officer

Richard George, MD, anesthesiologist at Marion (Ill.) VA Medical Center, also serves as a volunteer firefighter with Lake of Egypt Fire Protection District, a deputy with the Williamson County Sherriff’s Department and a communications officer with the VA, according to a Daily Republican report.

As a volunteer fighter, Dr. George mostly drives the trucks and trains the department’s paramedics. He is also a ham radio enthusiast, a skill that is valuable to the VA and the local community. He volunteers as a communications officer at the Medical Center and a volunteer in communications with state and county emergency management agencies.

Dr. George has been a volunteer firefighter since he was 16 and encourages other young people to get involved. He has also been in the military reserve for 37 years and was called up on active duty for two years following Sept. 11, 2001.
