Evanston, Ill.-based NorthShore University HealthSystem's Mark A. Deshur, MD, shared how he and his colleagues identified ongoing problems using data from their anesthesia information management system, according to Anesthesia Business Consultants President and CEO Tony Mira.
Mr. Mira recapped the presentation Dr. Deshur delivered at Practice Management 2019, Jan.17-19 in Las Vegas.
Three takeaways:
1. Dr. Deshur and his colleagues used dashboard data to determine how often practitioners failed to document arterial-line placement in a 10-month period. They discovered 16 A-line placement documentation failures per month, and a total of six C-line documentation failures.
2. The department built functionality into the AIMS that registers invasive A-line or C-line data. If documentation is still missing 30 minutes after line placement, the anesthesia provider receives a reminder. Providers who click on the popup are navigated to a place in the AIMS where they can document line placement.
3. The department has gained $15,000 in annual revenue after identifying and tracking the problem, according to Dr. Deshur.
