Mr. Mira notes a study, published online in JAMA Internal Medicine on Sept. 2, 2013, that found the costs of the five most common, expensive and preventable HAIs in patients. Three of these — surgical site infections, central line-associated bloodstream infections and ventilator-associated pneumonia — are subject to preventive measures commonly performed by anesthesiologists.
According to Mr. Mira, the study can help anesthesiologists prevent these common HAIs in their hospitals. By using the study and applying the methodology to data available in their hospitals, anesthesiologists can truly help their healthcare organizations improve quality and reduce costs.
