HHS released its Health Breach Reporting Tool which offers providers, including anesthesiologists, extensive resources for data breach reporting, according to a blog post by Anesthesia Business Consultants President and CEO Tony Mira.

Here’s what you should know:

1. HHS recently updated its website. The agency now lists all data breaches in an archive, rather than on the main page. It still highlights all recent breaches under investigation on its main page.

The changes were made after several public comments that the unarchived listings were harming businesses on the mend.

2. In addition to the recent changes, HHS launched the HBRT to assist organizations reporting an incidence and to help individuals searching for information.

3. The tool provides access to all publicly available data.

4. The tool allows for intuitive searches. Interested parties can search by date, type of breach or type of entity.

5. Mr. Mira compiled information on responding to cyberattacks. He suggests educating employees on “prudent” computer and internet use.

In the unfortunate event of a ransomware attack, the affected organization should contact the FBI’s National Cyber Investigative Task Force and also report the incident to the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team.

6. Mr. Mira recommends anesthesia practices immediately contact their attorneys in the event of an attack.
