Healthcare coalition urges action against drug shortages, offers 19 recommendations

A coalition of healthcare groups including the American Society of Anesthesiologists offered 19 recommendations for addressing critical medication shortages.

Here's what you should know:

1. The ASA, American Hospital Association, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and Institute for Safe Medication Practices released a set of proposals for regulatory, legislative and marketplace solutions to drug shortages.

2. The coalition calls on the FDA to share information on potential supply chain impacts to help healthcare organizations and manufacturers prepare for possible shortages.

3. The recommendations also include commissioning a Government Accountability Office study, creating a list of critical drugs and offering incentives to manufacturers that develop contingency production plans.

4. Healthcare leaders developed the recommendations at a summit about treating drug shortages as a matter of national security.
