FDA Updates Propofol Shortages, Announces New Website

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration hosted a call to update stakeholders on the current shortage of propofol injection and other anesthesia drugs and announced a new website designed to answer common questions about the shortage, according to a news release from the American Society of Anesthesiologists.

According to the FDA’s website, the following state of the propofol injection shortage is as follows:

  • Teva Pharmaceuticals has recently released some propofol 20-mL, 50-mL and 100-mL vials and expects additional quantities over the coming months.
  • Hospira Pharmaceuticals has released some propofol 20-mL, 50-mL and 100-mL and expects additional quantities in the coming months.
  • APP has increased production in response to the increased demand as well as received approval to release imported Fresenius Propoven 1%.
