Facilities Should Renew Efforts to Have Disaster Procedures in Place

Oklahoma’s recent deadly tornado and subsequent devastation — including the near-total loss of a nearby hospital — reminds healthcare facilities to continuously update and train with their disaster emergency plan, according to Tony Mira, president and CEO of Anesthesia Business Consultants.

CMS requires facilities to have a disaster plan in place, and HIPAA rules require providers to have a workable disaster recovery plan to open door again with minimal disruption and cost.

Facilities should also review with their coding and billing staff the appropriate use of the disaster recovery code and catastrophe/disaster related modifier code, he said.
