The study examined the binary outcomes of 32,001 elective general surgical patients at the Cleveland Clinic between Jan. 2005 and Sept. 2010. The outcomes were analyzed according to the hour of day, day of the workweek, month of the year and moon phase in which the surgery started.
The researchers found that mortality was not significantly more frequent in any month, and no association was found for day of week or time of day. Moon phase was also not significantly related to mortality, and there were no time-dependent differences in composite complications.
