Echocardiography society finds 1st anesthesiologist president in Dr. Madhav Swaminathan

Madhav Swaminathan, MD, was installed as president of the American Society of Echocardiography on June 25, becoming the first anesthesiologist to hold the position.

Dr. Swaminathan is a cardiovascular anesthesiologist with Duke Anesthesiology in Durham, N.C. He serves as vice chair of faculty development and clinical director of cardiothoracic anesthesiology, as well as an anesthesiology professor.

Historically, the ASE has almost exclusively elected cardiologists to serve as president.

"Diversity to ASE means diversity of thought," Dr. Swaminathan said. "This society values those who value echocardiography and welcomes those with diverse backgrounds who can think outside of the box like no one else can."
