1. He was honored for his work spearheading the enhanced recovery after surgery program at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C.
2. The program is a multimodal perioperative care pathway, which incorporates factors that tend to reduce hospital stay, like early mobilization and effective pain management.
3. At Carolinas Medical Center, the program has led to a 15 percent reduction in length of stay, 12 percent decrease in readmissions and has reduced the infection rate to zero.
4. Dr. Buhrman is slated to present his findings on the program in October 2016 during the annual American Society of Anesthesiologists meeting.
