Dr. Rene Boucher assaulted Sen. Rand Paul over yard work, prosecutors say — 5 insights

Retired anesthesiologist Rene Boucher, MD, allegedly assaulted Sen. Rand Paul, MD, R-Ky., after becoming "enraged over Paul's style of yard maintenance," New York Magazine reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. Dr. Boucher allegedly tackled Dr. Paul after witnessing him stack brush into a pile near Dr. Paul's property.

2. Dr. Paul fractured multiple ribs as a result of the attack. He also contracted and required medical attention for pneumonia.

3. Dr. Boucher pled guilty to the assault, while denying it was politically motivated.

4. Dr. Boucher's lawyer said Dr. Boucher is very meticulous, and that the neighbors had a "longstanding dispute over Paul's landscaping."

5. Dr. Boucher could face up to 10 years in prison or a $250,000 fine. Federal prosecutors are seeking only a 21-month sentence, however.
