Dr. John Zerwas receives ASA’s distinguished service award

John Zerwas, MD, received the 2024 Distinguished Service Award from the American Society of Anesthesiologists. 

Dr. Zerwas received the award for his contributions to the anesthesia field as an advocate, mentor and teacher, according to an Oct. 11 news release from the ASA. 

Throughout his career, Dr. Zerwas has served as the ASA’s president, completed seven legislative terms in the Texas House of Representatives and received recognition for his work in clinical practice. 

Dr. Zerwas currently serves as chancellor of The University of Texas System in Austin.

The award is the highest honor from the ASA and is presented each year to a member who has transformed the specialty of anesthesiology, the release said.
