In a study that will appear in the Annals of Neurology, researchers report that administration of isoflurane impaired the performance of mice on a standard test of learning and memory — a result that was not seen when desflurane was administered.
The researchers also found evidence that the two drugs have significantly different effects on mitochondrial function, with isoflurane (but not desflurane) inducing neuronal sell death.
