Computerized System Aims to Improve Anesthetic Dosing

Researchers from the Canary Islands have developed a computerized system to regulate the level of anesthesia given during surgical operations.

The goal is to adapt the dose of anesthesia to the individual characteristics of each patient and improve recovery time, using sensors and a monitor to record parameters that indicate the patient’s hypnotic state and adjust the dose accordingly.

Juan Albino Mendez, the lead author of the study, is a researcher in the Anaesthesia Control Group at the University of La Laguna, in the Canary Islands. A report about the system has been published in Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering.
