CMS has approved B. Braun Medical’s Stimuplex Single-Shot Nerve Block Needles for separate Medicare payment under the Non-Opioids Prevent Addiction in the Nation (NOPAIN) Act, effective retroactively to April 30.

The devices qualify as non-opioid medical devices under the law, according to an Oct. 14 news release from the company.

The NOPAIN Act allows Medicare to provide temporary separate payment for qualifying non-opioid pain relief drugs, biologics and medical devices used for postsurgical pain relief in outpatient surgical settings.

B. Braun’s qualifying devices are used in single-injection peripheral nerve block techniques as part of regional anesthesia procedures, the release said.

The law is set to expire Dec. 31, 2027, unless Congress reauthorizes it. B. Braun did not specify a reimbursement amount and said coverage and payment are not guaranteed for individual claims.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
