The investigators, from Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., reviewed the chats of 28,456 patients who underwent ambulatory surgery between May 2006 and May 2010 at a freestanding ASC.
The study found that cardiac and respiratory complications, along with other problems not directly related to surgery, were the most common causes of unplanned hospital admissions. Surgical-related reasons were also common causes of unplanned hospital admissions.
During the study period, 0.45 percent of patients experienced unplanned hospital admissions. The average age of admitted patients was 48 years.
