California set to pass standards bill for surgical technicians

California lawmakers have passed a bill requiring baseline education and competency standards for surgical technologists.

Currently, technologists are not required to have a certain level of education, certification or training, according to a report from California Healthline.

If signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown, the bill would go into law on Jan. 1, 2015. It would ban healthcare facilities from employing or contracting surgical technologists who do not have the baseline level of training, unless the technologist was employed before Jan. 1, 2013, or the facility was unable to find technologists with the requisite competencies. In that case, the technologist would be provided with continued education, according to the report.
