ASA 'vigorously' opposes recently passed billing legislation

The American Society of Anesthesiologists "vigorously" opposes surprise billing legislation that the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health passed in July.

Five insights:

1. HR 3630 entails an "unfair" government rate setting level, the ASA said.

2. According to the ASA, physicians would have no recourse to challenge insurer-set payment levels under the legislation.

3. If HR 3630 is passed into law, insurance companies won't have any incentive to create adequate provider networks, according to the ASA.

4. The ASA supports immediately discontinuing advancement of HR 3630.

5. Instead, the society encourages lawmakers to consider HR 3502, which "creates an independent dispute resolution system to allow physicians and insurers to resolve payment disputes."
