The American Society of Anesthesiologists offered senior citizens six tips to reduce confusion after surgery in recognition of Patient Safety Awareness Week, March 11 to March 17.
Here are the tips:
1. Ask for a preoperative cognitive test.
2. Have a caregiver, family member or friend visit you as you recover.
3. Check with a physician before taking medication that can affect your nervous system.
4. Ask for your hearing aid or glasses after surgery.
5. Request a hospital room with a window to tell whether it's day or night.
6. If you're staying overnight, pack a familiar object from home to help you readjust.
