Arkansas bill to loosen CRNA restrictions comes up 1 vote short — 3 insights

A bill to scale back restrictions for certified registered nurse anesthetists in Arkansas was rejected Feb. 28, according to the Arkansas Democrat Gazette.

Three insights:

1. Senate Bill 184 would have required CRNAs to work "in coordination with" a physician, dentist or other practitioner authorized to order anesthesia, rather than "under the supervision of" those providers.

2. The Arkansas Society of Anesthesiologists and American Society of Anesthesiologists opposed the bill.

3. Sponsored by Arkansas House Rep. Justin Gonzales, R-Okolona, the bill was one vote short of clearing the House Committee on Public Health, Welfare and Labor.
