Anesthesiologists Can Bring Cost Savings for Medical Tests

Researchers from Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans have show using a comprehensive preoperative triage system directed by anesthesiologists can bring reductions in patient charges, according to News & Research Outcome Magazine.

Patient charges for common medical tests were reduced by $18,187 for every 100 patients with mild diseases and $20,664 for moderate diseases.

The study include 1,400 patients, and anesthesiologists reviewed medical records, ordered tests and requested appropriate consults for total knee and hip replacement surgeries.

Lead study author Sharon Carrillo, MD, said the study was based on the belief that "dedicated anesthesiologists likely have more insight into surgical stresses and test requirements than primary care physicians who, with surgeons, still predominantly 'clear' most patients in U.S. clinical practice."
