Anesthesiologist Receives Hand Hygiene Leadership Award

An anesthesiologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital was one of six physicians in the country to receive the Lathem Physician Leadership Award in Hand Hygiene from Proventix Systems of Birmingham.

William O'Byrne, MD, is recognized for providing guidance in hand hygiene and ensuring staff member reminders on the importance of hand washing to reduce and prevent infections. Dr. O'Byrne is the only anesthesiologist to receive the award this year.

Other 2012 recipients are Scott James, MD, an infectious disease and virology specialist at UAB Hospital; Tracy Osborne, MD, an internal medicine and infectious disease specialist at TriStar Southern Hills Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.; Blal Zafar, MD, a hospitalist at River Park Hospital in McMinnville, Tenn.; Ty Hughston, MD, an internal medicine specialist at Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo, Texas; and Michael Darville, MD, ICU clinical director at Doctors Hospital in Nassau, Bahamas.
