Anesthesiologist pays $70K fine, temporarily surrenders medical license over illegal prescribing allegations

Anesthesiologist Floyd Smith, MD, agreed to pay $70,000 to resolve allegations that he prescribed drugs in violation of state law and outside professional standards, the Department of Justice announced March 30.

What you should know:

1. An Oklahoma City-based anesthesiologist, Dr. Smith also agreed to surrender his medical license and DEA registration for three years to settle the allegations.

2. Federal authorities alleged that Dr. Smith violated the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970 by illegally prescribing controlled substances to family members and failing to maintain medical files on those family members from January 2014 through February 2019.

3. Dr. Smith did not admit liability as part of the settlement.
