Anesthesia Study Identifies Most Common Sources of Bacterial Contamination

Research published in Anesthesia & Analgesia identified the most common sources of intraoperative bacterial transmission. The study focused on tracing stopcock contamination, which occurs frequently and is linked to increased patient mortality.

Researchers found that while bacterial contamination of patients, provider hands and the environment contributes to stopcock transmission, the surrounding patient environment is the most likely source.
