Anesthesia, orthopedic foundations award Drs. Alexander McLawhorn, Meghan Kirksey $135k grant — 3 insights

The Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, American Society of Anesthesiologists, Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research, Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Cigna Foundation and private donors awarded a $135,000 research grant to New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery researchers Alexander McLawhorn, MD, and Meghan Kirksey, MD, PhD.

Here's what you should know:

1. The researchers will study the impact consistent surgical team staffing has on patients following total joint arthroplasty.

2. OREF President David Lewallen, MD, said in a release his organization contributed to the grant to support OREF's collaborative research agenda. He said, "We are excited to partner with prestigious organizations … to broaden the perspective of orthopaedic research and encourage a more holistic approach to understanding how to ensure the best outcomes for our orthopaedic patients."

3. APSF President Mark Warner, MD, said the grant and the study will advance perioperative patient safety.
