AAPM&R endorses ASA's perioperative surgical home model — 4 insights

The American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation endorsed the American Society of Anesthesiologists' perioperative surgical home care model.

Here's what you should know:

1. The model aims to improve patient care and quality while reducing cost.

2. AAPRM&R endorsed the model in September. The organization noted that "physiatrists are vital in optimizing outcomes and function early and throughout the continuum of patient care, the PSH model, which guides patients through surgery via a system of coordinated care seems a logical fit."

3. Two AAPM&R members will have seats on the perioperative surgical home steering committee. William Adair, MD, will serve as one of the representatives.

4. ASA President Jeffrey Plagenhoef, MD, said in a release, "Having the PSH model endorsed by AAPM&R shows we continue to be on the right track with the PSH regarding processes important to patient care coordination in rehabilitation and recovery."
