According to Kenneth Elmassian, DO, president of the Michigan Society of Anesthesiologists, the society recently launched a public education campaign to raise awareness about how medical conditions affect the anesthesia experience. The campaign has the same goal as the medical education programs that Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder wants to expand: increasing awareness so all Michigan residents can better manage their chronic health conditions and take steps toward achieving wellness.
Dr. Elmassian said patients must understand how their medical conditions affect their surgical experience in order to make informed choices about their health. He said medical conditions such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, obesity, obstructive sleep apnea and heart disease can have “serious implications” for patients requiring surgery and anesthesia.
