6 insights on anesthesiologist compensation

Fifty-eight percent of anesthesiologists reported that they felt that they were fairly compensated, according to Medscape's 2019 anesthesiologist compensation report.

Six insights on anesthesiologist compensation:

1. Anesthesiology is one of the highest-earning physician specialties, according to Medscape's 2019 anesthesiologist compensation report. On average, anesthesiologists earned $392,000 a year, up from $386,000 in last year's report. Anesthesiologists had the ninth-highest annual compensation of all specialties.

2. Anesthesiologists are the top-earning professionals in 16 states, according to GOBankingRates' analysis of data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

3. Anesthesiologist assistants, who help anesthesiologists administer anesthesia and monitor patients, make a median salary of $134,000, MarketWatch reported based on data from the career site Payscale.

4. Nurse anesthetist roles are among the 14 top-paying healthcare jobs that don't require a doctorate, according to CNBC Make It. The median annual wage for nurse anesthetists is $167,950, and the field is expected to grow 16 percent through 2026.

5. American Society of Anesthesiologists President Linda Mason, MD, criticized a bill that would set payment for out-of-network providers at the insurer's median contracted rate. "Under this unusual arrangement, the federal government has joined with insurance companies to set and control payment to physicians and other providers," she said.

6. Anesthesia groups face mounting barriers to getting paid fairly, according to Garry Brydges, PhD, DNP, CRNA, president of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. The AANA is lobbying to change the process of challenging local coverage determinations issued by Medicare Administrative Contractors.
