5 topics anesthesia & pain management practices focused on in 2018

Issues facing anesthesia practices in 2018 included price transparency, operating room efficiency and informed consent, according to Anesthesia Business Consultants President and CEO Tony Mira.

Mr. Mira published a list of 17 key topics covered in ABC's 2018 publications. Here are five topics that were highlighted:

1. Anesthesiologist supply and demand. Studies suggest a possible future shortage of anesthesiologists.

2. MIPS participation in 2019. Anesthesia providers likely won't earn significant bonuses in MIPS performance year 2019.

3. Ambulatory surgery. Twelve cardiac catheterization procedures and five cardiology procedures were added to the list of covered ASC procedures in the 2019 Outpatient Prospective Payment System and ASC final rule.

4. Healthcare consolidation. Larger entities will continue making acquisitions. However, smaller private practices have a competitive edge.

5. New gastroenterology codes. The impact of gastroenterology code changes was significant as expected, but practices considering providing services for endoscopy centers should still take the changes into account.
