The American Society of Anesthesiologist named James Grant, MD, its 100th president at Anesthesiology 2017 on Oct. 25.
Here are five things to know about Dr. Grant:
1. Dr. Grant is the anesthesiology chair at Beaumont Hospital-Royal Oak (Mich.).
2. He has been highly active in the ASA. He serves as a treasurer and a member of the ASA's administrative council. He served as the chair of the ASA Section on Fiscal Affairs and Committee on Executive Compensation.
3. Dr. Grant is a past president of the Michigan State Medical Society and Michigan Society of Anesthesiologists.
4. The Michigan Society of Anesthesiologists honored Dr. Grant with its President's Award in 2012, while the Michigan State Medical Society awarded him its Presidential Citation in 2014.
5. Dr. Grant earned his medical degree from Detroit-based Wayne State University. He completed a residency at Chicago-based Northwestern University and then earned a MBA from Bloomington-based Indiana University.
Dr. Grant said in a release, "As the specialty involved in patient care before, during and after surgery, taking care of the sickest and most fragile patients in the intensive care unit and leading pain care programs, physician anesthesiologists are uniquely qualified to understand the intricacies of our nation’s complex health care system. During this upcoming year, we will further execute strategic decisions to drive our health system forward and ensure high quality, low cost, and safe medical care while delivering exceptional patient experiences."
Anesthesiology 2017 was Oct. 21 to Oct. 25 in Boston.
