49% of anesthesiologists take more than 3 weeks of vacation and 4 other statistics

Burnout rates continue to rise among all physicians. See how anesthesiologists stack up in Medscape's 2018 Anesthesiologist Lifestyle Report.

Here are five things to know.

1. Only 24 percent of anesthesiologists described themselves as "very" or "extremely" happy at work.

 2. A higher percentage of female anesthesiologists — 46 percent — reported burnout than their male counterparts; 35 percent of male anesthesiologists reported burnout.

3. Just under half — 48 percent — of anesthesiologists responded they cope with burnout through exercise. Less than 3 percent use marijuana, nicotine or prescription drugs, and 23 percent turn to alcohol.

 4. Among anesthesiologists who reported depression, 51 percent believe their condition has no effect on patient care.

 5. About a third — 34 percent — of surveyed anesthesiologists take three to four weeks of vacation a year, with 49 percent taking more than that. Only 17 percent take two weeks or less.
