4 insights into the CMS Physician Fee Schedule and how it will impact anesthesiologists

Anesthesia Business Consultants President and CEO Tony Mira penned a blog post on the 2018 Physician Fee Schedule and its impact on anesthesia.

Here's what you should know:

1. CMS increased the 2018 national anesthesia conversion factor upwards to $22.18 from $22.04 for practice expense and malpractice updates.

2. The national conversion factor for non-anesthesia services is $35.99, which is a 0.5 percent positive adjustment.

3. Mr. Mira said this is the first year in several that physicians did not have to wait until March for implementation rules, meaning physicians will have accurate reports beginning Jan. 1, 2018.

4. CMS had originally proposed decreasing the rate for anesthesiologists but did not implement the proposal after the American Society of Anesthesiologists lobbied against it.
