4 data-savvy ways improve anesthesia quality

Physicians at Evanston, Ill.-based NorthShore University HealthSystem leveraged data from their anesthesia information management system to drive improvements in documentation, clinical decision-making, financial performance, clinician satisfaction and more, according to Anesthesia Business Consultants President and CEO Tony Mira.

Mr. Mira shared takeaways from the presentation NorthShore's Mark A. Deshur, MD, delivered at Practice Management 2019, Jan.17-19 in Las Vegas.

Four ways NorthShore leveraged health IT to improve anesthesia quality:

1. Developed a maximum surgical blood order schedule for each specialty based on AIMS blood utilization data
2. Increased medication safety using smart labeling systems
3. Automated professional practice evaluations through anesthesia staff scheduling software
4. Used staff scheduling system algorithms to predict days when staffing will be sufficient, manageable or insufficient
