2 effective ways to identify drug diversion

Healthcare organizations need to go beyond education and awareness when it comes to combating drug diversion, according to Tom Knight, chairman of the Healthcare Diversion Network.

HDN is a nonprofit working to educate medical providers on how to handle drug diversion in their facilities.

Mr. Knight told Becker's ASC Review about two effective ways to identify drug diversion:

1. Encourage reporting. "Educating staff on how to recognize the signs and report instances of drug diversion is key. Some hospitals have seen success by creating a drug diversion task force with leaders from all parts of the hospital."

2. Track patterns. "Healthcare leaders should consider implementing machine learning technologies that identify patterns in dozens of data sources, including EHRs, hospital supply chain and inventory data, and medication-dispensing cabinets. Analytics tools like this can quickly alert healthcare organizations to possible instances of drug diversion so they can reduce the potential for patient harm."
