Under the proposed bill, employers — including state and local government employers — would have the optiton of choosing instead to pay 80 percent of the cost of employee coverage. Sen. Mark Jansen (R-Gaines Township) prefers the 80-20 approach over the cap, which is preferred by the House.
Gov. Rick Snyder has said he will sign either standard. The Senate left before the House took action but is scheduled to resume session for one day on July 13. Budget provisions on state aid to K-12 districts and municipalities depends on employees paying more for health insurance.
