According to the report, the lawsuit was filed by a California man who suffered an anoxic brain injury during an eye surgery at Mazzocco Ambulatory Surgical Center in Van Nuys, Calif.
The complaint was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court and charged the anesthesiologist and the surgery center with negligence for not meeting medical standards of care. According to the report, the plaintiff went to the surgery center to have one eye lens replaced with an artificial lens. The complaint alleges the plaintiff had a reaction to the anesthesia and went into a deeper level of sedation than the anesthesiologist intended.
The anesthesiologist settled with the plaintiff before the trial, according to the report. The trial jury found Mazzocco Ambulatory Surgical Center to be negligent and awarded the patient $2.25 million in damages.
