According to the report, the change could affect early retirees, as a married couple with a combined annual income of $64,000 could receive Medicaid. The anomaly would let 3 million more people qualify for Medicaid because Social Security benefits would not longer count towards eligibility.
After initially defending the change, the Obama administration said late Tuesday it would look for a solution to the issue. Health and Human Services spokesman Richard Sorian said the administration is “concerned that, as a matter of law, some middle-income Americans may be receiving coverage through Medicaid, which is meant to serve only the neediest Americans.”
