UT Health San Antonio has begun offering endoscopic submucosal dissection, a minimally invasive technique for removing early-stage colorectal lesions without surgery.
The procedure is performed using a flexible endoscope to dissect large benign polyps or early-stage cancers from the colon wall. It can allow patients to avoid traditional surgery and preserve bowel function if the disease is caught early, according to a Nov. 3 system news release.
The first patient treated with the method at UT Health San Antonio underwent a complete resection and was discharged the following day.
