Chicago health system leans into ASC growth

Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health added 90 ambulatory care sites over the past two fiscal years, including 34 across nine states in 2025.

“A CommonSpirit CEO Wright Lassiter III said on an Oct. 1 investor call that the system has dropped its focus on hospital acquisitions.

“We’re primarily looking at ambulatory growth to meet the needs of our consumers and align with the future of healthcare delivery,” he said. This reflects an established and growing trend in the ASC space, as hospitals and health systems look increasingly to invest in ASCs.

CFO Daniel Morissette said the system is working on a strategic plan that includes a greater ambulatory footprint and more touchpoints outside of its acute care hospitals. But he said CommonSpirit is being disciplined in its approach.

“We’re all ears with partnerships, with acquisitions, with things that we can do strategically, but we’re also very fiscally disciplined about only paying what we believe we’re able to pay to make any acquisition or major expansion financially successful.”
