Sacramento, Calif.-based UC Davis Health is training UC Davis Fire Department personnel on the “i-gel,” an advanced airway device.
Unlike traditional breathing tubes, the i-gel sits above the windpipe, making it easier to insert quickly, requiring less training, and it is usable by a single provider in high-pressure emergencies, according to a Sept. 22 news release from the health system.
Certified registered nurse anesthetists at UC Davis Health led the training, which included classroom instruction and hands-on simulation. The program builds on a partnership launched in 2021 and expands firefighters’ capabilities beyond their EMT certification.
The initiative not only benefits the campus community but surrounding areas to which the Fire Department responds under mutual aid agreements, according to the release.
